The value of “spice” for “life” is profoundly illustrated in 1 Kings 10:10. When a queen from Sheba gazed spellbound at the wisdom and achievements of an impressive young king, she chose spice as part of her gift of enduring appreciation…”never again were so many spices brought in as those the Queen of Sheba gave to King Solomon.”

Since the beginning of civilization, a mystique with the pursuit for spice has been linked to the Far East. By the 6th century BC, Chinese merchants were actively trading for spices from the tropics. The explorer Vasco da Gama (1498) symbolized the emergence of the colonial era, an important precursor to the present age of globalization. Upon anchoring on Oriental shores his exuberant crews would shout “for Christ and spices.”

How profound, that a commodity sought for its life-enhancing qualities to season and preserve, would become so directly associated with the message of Jesus Christ.

As we fast forward to 2004 and observe the Asian masses following Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism and Animism along the ancient trading routes, a greater life-enhancing dynamic of Christ’s love for lost people demands to be proclaimed. It is our longing and desire to shout to these billions of people, that Jesus alone is the distinct flavor and preservation for life. New initiatives are being launched in Asia. They represent the ultimate exploration of “spice” for “life” and you can participate in them. Why not join an adventure in this era, to reach the peoples of “Asian Spice” and claim them for Christ?

How you can pray:

1)  Pray for the new initiative that was launched into East Asia in the summer of 2004. Pray for team members in the demanding process of learning the first of two difficult languages.

2)  Pray for our workers that they will be able to find the unique cultural keys that will unlock the hearts of those with whom they share the message of Christ.

3)  Pray for health and safety for our personnel and their children as they live in challenging places.

4)  Pray that through relationships that will be built amongst the least-reached of East Asia and Indonesia, that God’s Kingdom will be enlarged here on earth.

5)  Pray that our ministry teams will truly function as teams in unity of purpose, vision and mission. We expect God to empower so that fruit will be harvested and his Kingdom firmly planted.
